I finally made it to downtown Dallas this weekend.
It’s a cool place.
Stumbling into Dealey Plaza
At one point, I noticed that there were a lot of museums in the area. I thought, “Hm. I wonder if JFK was shot around here.”
I had completely forgot that JFK was killed in Dallas until that moment, which is ironic because one of my favorite books is Libra (Lee Harvey Oswald is the main character.)
…and I was right. Apparently there is a marker on the sidewalk where the shooting actually happened, which seems a little strange.
There are also several red Pegasus signs throughout Dallas.
The red Pegasus is the logo of Mobil, and the neon Pegasus above the Magnolia Hotel is Dallas’s equivalent of Minneapolis’s iconic Grain Belt sign. (The Pegasus is way cooler.)
Downtown Dallas was very …quiet
It seems like very few people actually live in downtown Dallas. There are a few clusters of expensive-looking condos and tenement houses, but there doesn’t appear to be much to do on the weekends. (This is not unlike downtown Miami.)
There is also a weird campaign where downtown residents are attempting to shame the police to crackdown on panhandlers, but that has a weird anti-homeless vibe which I find distasteful.
Then again, the problem may be worse at night.0
